Currency

Canadian dollars are used in Canada. However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted. Visit the Bank of Canada Website for conversion tables.

Credit Cards

Visa, American Express and MasterCard are honoured by most restaurants, stores, hotels, car rental firms and other points of sale and service. Be aware that shops and businesses rarely accept personal cheques, but credit cards are widely accepted.

Tipping

It is customary to tip taxi drivers, hotel porters and waiters/waitresses at restaurants and bars. Gratuities are seldom included in Canadian restaurants. It is customary to tip 15% on the total bill before tax, 20% for exceptional service. Many restaurants may charge an automatic 15% gratuity for larger groups. This is up to the individual establishment but is usually applicable to groups of 8 or more.
